OFF ROAD

Launch mountain bike ride, St Leonards Forest May 2005
Updated21/11/2007

The club has no regular official off road rides at present, although Mike Crossett does a ride most weeks that members
are most welcome to join.

I go out off road most weeks, but at the moment it's usualy in the evening during the week. 80% up around the Surrey hills/North Downs area, sometimes the South Downs & locally at St Lennards Forest.

Reports from varoius ATB rides:-

6-11-07 Evening ride at Pitch Hill (2 hours)

So, SO dry, so where to go this week,,, Pitch hill or St Len's??? It was Pitch that won & yes it was dry, dry, dry, pretty much perfect conditions for me. We went to the top of Pitch to warm up then down to ‘T2' with the right turn on to some other track, the triangle, then all the way down to Peaslake all on single tracks. We then had the long climb up to the top of Barry's so we could do (er) Barry! Back over to the triangle at pitch where we had a discussion about how loud Stephens screaming is, but he mentioned something about pots & black kettles??? So we did that ‘ Hell with the addition of a tree on the right' thing, St had been quieter than me until he got to the Tree on the right 8-). Back to the top, then back down the anticlockwise decent ending up at the bottom of Pitch car park. I didn't tell St this though & off up the other side of the valley we went and back down to Peaslake to finish on a long drag back up to Pitch car park.

2 hours

1-11-07 Morning ride at St Len's (about an hour-n-abit?)

Stephen ‘no that is a crank in his hand' kept asking for another ride & as he had found St Leonard's Forest the other day that was where we would go. Not an evening ride this week but an early-ish morning one. Would you believe it, after only a couple of warm up single tracks, yep, the crank did its thing again, so we missed the good stuff, well, till next time anyway.

Ground conditions were extremely good for this time of year. So another ride soon I think.

20-9-07 Evening ride at Holmbury StMarys (2 hours)

I was joined this week by Stephan Williams, whom broke his back ATBing about this time last year (not with me I hasten to add!!), but he had no problem keeping up on the descents, even though it was dark for the latter part of the ride.

24-9-07 Evening ride at Pitch Hill (2 hours)

This week we went to Pitch Hill, yes it had rained quite hard in the early hours, tornados an-all!!! But having had so little rain over the last month, I thought it should be pretty dry up on the hills.

After last weeks ride I was surprised that Stephen came out again, but out he came so off we went, stopping to look at ‘ Uriah ' (a big bowl/quarry with 3 drop-in's). We didn't do it. Then over to the top of '2 Head dog', yep, another quarry, Didn't do the Dog but did do the easy one to the side of it, although Stephan walked it as it was the first time he'd seen it & it was dark by then. We did a big loop around and then on to ‘Three Pots', three rolling very large potholes, Telling St to stop before the third one, he did, well, more of a stopping in it!!! Oh, I didn't clear it either!!! /-8

Despite it being reasonably dry, as in no mud, the single track after ‘Three Pots' was slightly treacherous due to the slippery tree roots, but onwards if not at a sidewise manner! On to the ‘Switch backs' & more falling off? Back up to Pitch & more squirming about on more wet roots, missing out the ‘Walkers Bottom' (single track), we dripped down in to the valley to then climb up to ‘T2', I'm sure its got a better name than that but I cant recall it! Yep, more roots and all that but we'd got'n use-to that by now. So I took St down ‘Tree on the right' which I thought would be great having done it a few weeks ago, but no, it had washed out during the night & was now more like HELL , but HELL with the addition of a tree on the right!!!

Some how St made it & I think most of the residents around Pitch knew about it too, either from HIS screaming (I didn't scream at-all-much!) or from my laughing at the fact he actually made it.

Back to the top of Pitch, a quick easy loop then down beside the BIG quarry, but no, on the loop St's L/H crank fell off, the bolt was gone, it was probably in HELL ? So he had to ‘hoof it' back to the top.

Almost two hours. Great laugh. Should be out next week, Wednesday eve.

Well done Stephan, what a star you are,,,,,,,,,,,,
