Welcome to Horsham Cycling

flypass.jpg

Our club is welcoming to all types of rider, from leisure cyclist to competitive racer. Seven groups meet at the Carfax every Sunday morning, each with different speeds and distances in mind.

Horsham is surrounded by fantastic Sussex countryside and quiet roads. The club is a great way of discovering new routes, making friends and perhaps opening yourself to new cycling challenges.

You can join us for a ride or two without being a member, why not give us a try? See the rides page for more details.

Mike Carr Social Groups' Downhill Trophy - July 10th 2016

Philip van der Veen wins the first Horsham Cycling trophy of the season as he powers downhill to victory, his seventh win in the event in eight years.

Fiona Ordidge is the furthest lady.

The rain may have reduced the entry numbers but it didn't dampen the enthusiasm or fun for the seven members and one guest who turned out for the 10th running of this event.

Once again Honeybridge Lane near Dial Post was the road used. Peter Delve explained the rules of the competition, displayed the trophy on offer to the winner and distributed energy bars donated by Zoot Foods (www.zootfoods.com).

A chalk line was drawn on the crest of the hill, riders setting off at one minute intervals under the timekeeping of Colin Ferry. The formula was as previously, one half turn of the pedals to get going and then honour bound to just freewheel down, coming to a rest at the slight rise just under a mile from the start, where another line was drawn by Peter and Stewart Forbes.

All eight riders successfully launched themselves down the hill and we enjoyed watching the riders squeeze every last drop of momentum from their bikes.

There was a delay in announcing the results and presenting the trophy as we watched a lengthy standoff between a horse box driver and a white van driver twenty yards further up the lane. Once resolved and bikes safely guarded from any damage by the reversing vehicle, Peter announced the results and former chairman Mike Carr, twice a winner of this event, presented the trophy to Philip.

Stan's Bike Shack at Partridge Green was the venue for post event coffee, cake and analysis of the proceedings.

Well done to everyone taking part.

Thanks to Peter, Colin and Stewart for their assistance in running this event and Mike for presenting the trophy.

All the photos will be on the website later in the week.

Ride Leader Training

Some of you will be aware that we have been looking into providing some training/guidance for our ride leaders. We are conscious that members volunteer for this role and we believe HC could do more for you in helping you in this role.

Philip van der Veen and myself have met with a qualified CTC Trainer and he will be leading a small friendly workshop on Saturday morning 5 March at the The Holbrook for up to 15 of our ride leaders. I would emphasise that this is not about taking on more responsibilities but very much an interactive session to help you run the rides with the outcome of providing you with practical hints and tips.

Philip will be asking our ride co-ordinators for names of ride leaders who would like to attend so please look out for this request and do try to come along. We will see how it goes with a view to running another session later in the year.
