Welcome to Horsham Cycling

Our club is welcoming to all types of rider, from leisure cyclist to competitive racer. Seven groups meet at the Carfax every Sunday morning, each with different speeds and distances in mind.

Horsham is surrounded by fantastic Sussex countryside and quiet roads. The club is a great way of discovering new routes, making friends and perhaps opening yourself to new cycling challenges.

You can join us for a ride or two without being a member, why not give us a try? See the rides page for more details or read the FAQ.

Club rides re-start 4th April 2021

British Cycling have just published their detailed guidance on the steps affiliated clubs should take to make their rides count as ‘organised sport’ as defined in the Covid rules that came into effect on 29 March. This will allow us to ride in larger groups than the 6 now allowed for casual rides; we have capped the maximum at 10 for the time being.

Apart from group size, we will have to take additional measures to comply with BC’s guidance and ensure the safety of our riders and members of the public. These are set out in the attached PDF. Note: this is similar to the document the Club published in June last year, but has some important differences relating to distancing and other measures – please take a few minutes to read it before joining a ride.

Tier-4 - all club rides suspended (Jan 2021)

As you are all aware, West Sussex is now in Tier 4 in terms of the Local Covid Restrictions. This means that all club rides will be suspended until further notice. Tier 4 effectively takes us back to the same restrictions that we had through November.

The British Cycling website includes more details, so please familiarise yourselves with all the new guidelines, however the following paragraph taken from the BC site essentially summarises the impact on group riding:

Surrey enters Tier 3/4 - ride guidance from 19 Dec 2020

As you probably know, W Sussex has fortunately remained in Tier 2 of Covid lockdown for now, but most of Surrey* has moved to Tier 4. This makes little difference for outdoor exercise: we can still cycle in groups of up to 6 in both tiers and can pass through higher and lower tiers. However, the latest British Cycling guidance on group rides includes the following:

'Social interaction before and after group rides should be extremely limited and only take place in line with legal gathering limits and other relevant restrictions. Groups from 'Medium' (Tier 1) or 'High' (Tier 2) areas should not stop for a break while in a 'Very high' (Tier 3) area, and groups from 'Very high' (Tier 3) areas should not stop for a break outside of their area.'

This means:

  • Banana breaks etc should NOT be taken in a Tier 3/4 area.
  • Anyone from a Tier 3 area should not stop to socialise after a ride.

British Cycling have made it clear that their individual third-party personal liability insurance and the Club's ride leader insurance will be invalidated if riders wilfully contravene Government advice.

Resumption of Club Rides - resume from 6th Dec 2020

I am pleased to inform you that we will be resuming the Sunday Club Rides starting next week - Sunday December 6th. These rides will follow all the previous guidelines including a maximum 6 riders per group and social distancing meeting points as issued in October which were as follows:

  • Inter Riders meet at the W (Swan Walk) end of the Carfax with Inter 1 in front of Fat Face and Inter 2 in front of Panino's.
  • Sporting Riders meet at the E (Bandstand) end of the Carfax with SG1 in front of the Halifax, SG2 in front of Crates and SG3 in front of Nat West.

Please go to the area designated for your selected ride group and avoid mixing with the other groups. Of course all groups should keep well away from any other gatherings and busy thoroughfares.

Rides Suspended - Lockdown in England

It is with regret but I guess not too much of a surprise that I must inform you that all official Club Rides are suspended effective immediately. This is in line with the new national restrictions being introduced as well as British Cycling's recommendations. As soon as these restrictions are lifted we will notify members of the resumption of Club Rides - fingers crossed this could be as early as 3rd December 2020.
