Road Racing

Road racing update (January 2019)

The new road racing season has now started and we have had a few members dipping their toes already.

If you are interested in riding the Surrey League events at Dunsfold Aerodrome then you need to act soon. To do these events you will need to have completed two of the race preparation courses for novice races. There are only two of these events scheduled between now and the start of the season so remember to attend these events. They are run at a sensible pace so dont be worried about being unfit the coaches are very experienced and will tailor the events to the standard of the riders present they want to get you interested in racing not put you off so please dont feel like you wont be up to the grade.

Affiliation to the Surrey League

Horsham Cycling has been affiliated to the Surrey League since December 2017. This allows any member of Horsham Cycling to race in any Surrey League road race.
As part of this affiliation Horsham Cycling has to organize and host two events on behalf of the Surrey League. These events are on:

  • 7pm 15th May 2019 Dunsfold Aerodrome
  • 7pm 29th May 2019 Dunsfold Aerodrome

The club needs volunteers to help with hosting these events so please let me know if you are available.

What do you need to enter a road race

To race in a road race event you must have the following as a minimum:

  • British Cycling silver membership
  • 4th category road race licence from British Cycling this is separate to the licence you get as part of your BC membership
  • Standard road bike disc brakes are acceptable

Have a look at the British Cycling website or Youtube about how to get into road racing there are some useful videos that give a good taste for preparing to road race.

To race in a Surrey League event you will need to have attended/passed two novice race days hosted by the Surrey League. Upcoming dates for these events are:

  • 23rd February 2019
  • 23rd March 2019
  • 28th April 2019 [new]

Further information on these events can be found at:

You can race in the Surrey League as a private member. Alternatively, you can race as an affiliated member as part of Horsham Cycling. To do this you will need to join the Surrey League via their website. This will cost 20 as Horsham Cycling have a discount of 50% on the usual joining fee, it is worth doing this as you will also receive a discount on the entry fee for each race you participate in.

Racing non-Surrey League events

You can still race at other events hosted under British Cycling rules without attending the Surrey League novice race days. There are a number of winter race series that go on during January, February and March which you may wish to dip your toe in before the Surrey League events start. A list of these events can be found on the British Cycling website at the Events Search Tool.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions, Im happy to advise as best I can.
