Surrey enters Tier 3/4 - ride guidance from 19 Dec 2020

As you probably know, W Sussex has fortunately remained in Tier 2 of Covid lockdown for now, but most of Surrey* has moved to Tier 4. This makes little difference for outdoor exercise: we can still cycle in groups of up to 6 in both tiers and can pass through higher and lower tiers. However, the latest British Cycling guidance on group rides includes the following:

'Social interaction before and after group rides should be extremely limited and only take place in line with legal gathering limits and other relevant restrictions. Groups from 'Medium' (Tier 1) or 'High' (Tier 2) areas should not stop for a break while in a 'Very high' (Tier 3) area, and groups from 'Very high' (Tier 3) areas should not stop for a break outside of their area.'

This means:

  • Banana breaks etc should NOT be taken in a Tier 3/4 area.
  • Anyone from a Tier 3 area should not stop to socialise after a ride.

British Cycling have made it clear that their individual third-party personal liability insurance and the Club's ride leader insurance will be invalidated if riders wilfully contravene Government advice.

Full BC guidance is here:

Our meeting-points on the Carfax remain as before:

  • Social Riders meet at the W (Swan Walk) end of the Carfax in front of the Cook shop.
  • Inter Riders meet at the W (Swan Walk) end of the Carfax with Inter 1 in front of Fat Face and Inter 2 in front of Panino's.
  • Sporting Riders meet at the E (Bandstand) end of the Carfax with SG1 in front of the Halifax, SG2 in front of Crates and SG3 in front of Nat West.

Please go to the area designated for your selected ride group, keep to the Rule of 6 and avoid mixing with the other groups. Of course all groups should keep well away from any other gatherings and busy thoroughfares.

Thanks for your patience and understanding. Hopefully things will return closer to normality over the coming months.

* The only area in Surrey still in Tier 2 is the borough of Waverley (which includes Cranleigh, Chiddingfold, Godalming and Haslemere).
